M.P. Shah Hospital: Pioneering Sustainability in Healthcare as Africa’s First and the World’s Third to Earn JCI-GSC Certification

M.P. Shah Hospital has achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first hospital in Africa and the third worldwide to receive the prestigious Healthcare Sustainability Certification from the Joint Commission International (JCI) and the Geneva Sustainability Centre (GSC). The landmark achievement was celebrated at a ceremony attended by Chairman Dr. Manoj Shah, CEO Dr. Toseef Din, Chief Sustainability & Operations Officer Dr. Joan Osoro, and the hospital’s dedicated staff, marking a new chapter in sustainable healthcare for the hospital.

The hospital’s journey began in 2018 with the planting of a single tree behind the CEO’s office, a symbolic act that sparked the Green365 initiative. This program has since driven transformative changes, embedding sustainability into daily operations. By closely monitoring water consumption, optimizing energy use, and improving waste management, M.P. Shah has significantly reduced its environmental footprint.

The hospital’s first-ever Sustainability Report, released alongside the certification, highlights its commitment to building a healthier, more sustainable future. Central to this success is the hospital’s staff, whose dedication has turned vision into reality. From nurses segregating waste for recycling to engineers installing energy-efficient systems, every team member has embraced sustainability with purpose. Clinicians have challenged single-use norms, while staff-led initiatives like Green Champions and “Meatless Mondays” have fostered a culture of innovation. “Our people are the heart of this achievement,” said Dr. Osoro. “Their compassion and courage have made sustainability a lived value at M.P. Shah.”

The hospital’s efforts include rainwater harvesting in new infrastructure, hospital-wide LED retrofitting, motion sensor systems, and recycling of linen and e-waste. Beyond environmental measures, M.P. Shah has prioritized human sustainability through expanded mental health programs, staff mentorship, and a workplace culture rooted in dignity and inclusion. “When we conserve water or reduce emissions, we’re honoring our patients, our community, and future generations,” Dr. Toseef Din, CEO emphasized.

This certification positions M.P. Shah as a global leader in sustainable healthcare. The Sustainability Report serves as both a reflection of progress and a pledge to continue advancing. “We are not just treating illness; we are protecting life in all its forms,” said Dr. Manoj Shah, Chairman of the hospital. As the first African hospital to earn this honor, M.P. Shah sets a powerful example, proving that healthcare can lead the way in building a sustainable future.
