M.P. Shah Hospital has taken a monumental step in the fight against cancer with the grand opening of the Santaben and Nemchand Popatlal Mandhu Oncology Ward, a cutting-edge facility designed to transform cancer care in East and Central Africa.

The hospital, in affiliation with HCG: Cancer Care Kenya, reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the growing burden of cancer in the region. “M.P. Shah Hospital recognises the growing burden of cancer in East and Central Africa, and we are committed to bridging the gap in access to high-quality cancer treatment, offering hope and healing to patients and their families across the region,” Dr. Vishal Patel.

The new Oncology Centre, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, positions M.P. Shah at the forefront of delivering world-class cancer care. It offers comprehensive oncology services, including advanced radiotherapy using linear accelerators with MLC conformal therapy, CT-based treatment planning, and 3D conformal planning technology. A multidisciplinary team of clinical oncologists, radiotherapy radiographers, and specialists ensures personalized, evidence-based care in a compassionate environment, transforming the cancer care landscape through innovation and a patient-centered approach.

The ward boasts modern facilities, including two private single-patient rooms (expandable for twin-bed use), two four-bed sharing wards, and en-suite toilet and bathroom facilities. An eight-nurse station oversees operations, ensuring seamless patient care.

At the launch, M.P. Shah Hospital’s CEO, Dr. Toseef Din, hailed the facility as a beacon of hope amid rising cancer diagnoses. She reflected on the hospital’s milestones, underscoring its unwavering dedication to healthcare excellence. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Vishal Patel highlighted the global and local toll of cancer, noting it as the second-leading cause of death worldwide, claiming 10 million lives annually. In Kenya, breast, prostate, and cervical cancers dominate, with early detection critical to successful treatment. “This unit will greatly facilitate early diagnosis,” Dr. Patel said, rallying support with a call to action: “Alone, we can do so little. Together, we can do so much”

The event resonated deeply with attendees, including cancer survivor Caroline Muthoni Mate, who praised the hospital’s humane approach to patient care. Committee Chairman GP Shah lauded the generosity of the Popatlal Mandhu family, whose support made the ward possible. Board Chairman Dr. Manoj Shah shared a personal perspective, recounting his wife’s cancer survival and shedding light on the stark realities faced by patients, including those at Kenyatta National Hospital’s Children’s Cancer Ward.

The launch was graced by Santaben and Nemchand’s children, who were honoured guests, marking a tribute to their parents’ legacy.
