M.P. Shah Hospital Commemorated World Environment Day 2024 on June 7th under the theme “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.”

The commemoration event was attended by Dr. Manoj Shah, Chairman of the Board; Dr. Manilal Dodhia, Vice Chairman; Mr. Thomas Ogolla, Communications and Public Affairs Practitioner at UNEP Africa; Hon. Nasra Nanda, CEO of the Kenya Green Building Society; & Dr. Toseef Din, CEO of M.P. Shah Hospital. The day featured an insightful panel discussion around the theme, departmental e-waste drives, and a tree planting session at the hospital.

In her address, the Keynote Speaker Hon. Nasra Nanda emphasized, “As we rapidly urbanize, we need to work in ways that promote the health and well-being of the community and nature, while also complying with the law.” Recognizing the interconnectedness of human health and environmental well-being, the hospital strives to achieve a balance.

“Healthcare contributes 4.4% of global waste emissions, bringing us a significant responsibility to explore how we can turn this around and support SDG 13 (Climate Action) while promoting SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being),” said Dr. Toseef Din, CEO of M.P. Shah Hospital.

The hospital continues to demonstrate its commitment by adopting eco-friendly practices and equipment. A significant milestone has been an approximately 70% reduction in paper usage, achieved through minimized printing and a shift towards digital systems. This not only conserves resources but also reduces hospital waste.

The hospital’s commitment extends beyond its walls. M.P. Shah has dedicated 10 acres of land at Thiba Dam solely for tree planting, with a goal of planting 200,000 trees, actively contributing to land restoration.

In partnership with Africa Collect Textiles and the WEEE Centre, the hospital has implemented initiatives for collecting textile and e-waste, and has already collected 400 kg of e-waste, ensuring proper disposal and preventing environmental hazards. By actively participating in #GenerationRestoration efforts, M.P. Shah Hospital sets a commendable example for the healthcare sector. Our commitment to environmental responsibility aligns with our mission of providing excellent healthcare every day.
