On March 14, 2025, M.P. Shah Hospital joined the global observance of World Kidney Day, spotlighting the rising prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Africa, fuelled by hypertension, diabetes, and limited healthcare access. With renal transplantation a life-saving option for end-stage kidney failure remaining underutilized due to donor shortages, high costs, and insufficient infrastructure, the hospital seized this opportunity to educate and inspire. The day featured free kidney tests, and a series of events aimed at honouring patients, donors, and advocates, while addressing the urgent need for improved transplant services in Kenya.
A highlight of the commemoration was the Kidney Support Group event, uniting patients, donors, and experts like Dr. Hussein Bagha, Head of the Renal and Transplant Unit, alongside Mr. John Gikonyo of the Renal Patients Society of Kenya and Mr. Joab Wako of Transplant Ed. Attendees, including 23 year old dialysis patient Ronald Kasyoka, shared stories of resilience and gained insights on managing kidney disease through early detection and transplantation. The day concluded with a tree-planting ceremony, symbolizing hope and growth, as renal nurse Mary Wahu, emphasized the hospital’s commitment to supporting kidney patients in their journey.
