Early Detection Saves Lives

This Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, MP Shah Hospital joins the global effort to raise awareness, promote prevention, and encourage women to take charge of their cervical health.

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, yet too many women are diagnosed late. Kenya records about 5,236 new cases of cervical cancer each year, and about 3,211 deaths per year. The key to changing this narrative is awareness, screening, vaccination, and early detection.

Why This Month Matters

Cervical cancer often develops silently, without symptoms in its early stages. Regular screening can detect abnormal changes before cancer develops, making treatment simpler and outcomes better.

No woman should die from a disease we know how to prevent.

Who is at risk?

Any woman can develop cervical cancer, but some women are at a higher risk if:

  • They have sexually transmitted diseases/ infections ( STIs)
  • They have poor immunity due to e.g. HIV infection
  • They use tobacco or other drugs
  • They have multiple sexual partners
  • Their partner has multiple sexual partners
  • They started having sex at an early age

Who Should Get Screened?

In line with Kenyan national guidelines, we encourage:

  • Women aged 25–49 years, or all sexually active women, to undergo screening
  • HPV testing as the preferred screening method where available
  • Pap smear or VIA as effective alternatives
  • Women living with HIV to screen more frequently

Screening is quick, safe, and can save your life.

HPV Vaccination: Protect the Next Generation

The HPV vaccine protects against the virus responsible for most cervical cancers.

  • Recommended for girls aged 10–14 years
  • Most effective when given before sexual debut
  • A powerful step toward eliminating cervical cancer

Vaccination today means prevention tomorrow.

Symptoms That Should Not Be Ignored

While early disease may have no symptoms, seek medical care if you experience:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Persistent pelvic pain
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Unusual vaginal discharge

Early evaluation leads to better outcomes.
