M.P. Shah Hospital Meets NHIF Officials

A delegation from M.P. Shah Hospital led by Board Chairman Dr. Manoj Shah, recently met officials from the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) in a session attended by newly-appointed Chairperson Mrs. Hannah Muriithi and the fund’s CEO Mr. Geoffrey Mwangi.

The meeting discussed pertinent issues in the health sector including affordable medical access, WHO millennium development goal on health and attainment of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), which is part of the government’s big four agenda.

Speaking during the event, the chairman of M.P. Shah Hospital Board of Governors Dr. Manoj Shah highlighted major milestones achieved by the hospital including recently launched weight-loss surgery for overweight patients, the new satellite clinic at Village Market Mall, and the annual free heart surgeries conducted by the hospital to children with congenital heart conditions.

The NHIF leadership revealed that more than three quarters of the country’s population has no access to medical insurance with most of them pushed to poverty every year as a result of out-of-pocket medical expenses. They also lauded the contribution of the hospital in providing quality and affordable healthcare, and extended a hand of invitation to steer the health sector.

NHIF which has a membership of approximately 6.8 million and is currently working the M.P. Shah Hospital among other healthcare providers in Kenya to offer affordable surgical packages to members covered under the national insurance scheme.
