Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is part of the Pneumoviridae family of viruses that causes the common cold (upper respiratory infection). It was first identified in 2001 and is found worldwide.

How does it spread?

Through aerosol droplet infection meaning an infected person as they cough and sneeze will spread it through the air and contaminate surfaces

Can it make me sick?

People infected with hMPV will have cold or flu-like symptoms:

1. Cough
2. Fever
3. Sore throat
4. Runny or stuffy nose
5. Body ache
6. Headache.

Most people have a mild self-limiting illness not requiring hospitalization. However, in some individuals it may cause infection in the lower respiratory tract resulting in a pneumonia. Symptoms of more severe disease include:

1. Wheezing
2. Difficulty breathing
3. Chest pain
4. Dizziness
5. Severe fatigue
6. Dehydration
7. Persistent fever
Extremes of age, immunocompromised individuals, people living with lung diseases such as Asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, and smokers are more susceptible to severe illness

How can I test for it? Is there a vaccine? Is there a cure?

There is a PCR test but is not routinely recommended.

There is currently no vaccine or antiviral treatment for Hmpv .

Treatment is symptomatic

Should I be worried? How can I protect myself?

Staying in good health

Wearing a mask in overcrowded areas

Ensuring good ventilation

Frequent handwashing

Seek medical advice if in doubt.
